Visit report - July 2011

A group of volunteers visited the BMK School during the summer. Each volunteer was self-funded. Their greeting was simply fantastic, red carpet, marquees, children lining the route, 6 hours of celebrations!

The guest of honour at the celebration was the District Commissioner - the President's local representative

Two representatives held a meeting with the District Commissioner at his offices during their visit. He pledged whatever support he could give to help BMK School to become a model school for others. The District Commissioner also wrote a letter of thanks for Wellfare's efforts at the school.

During the two week visit we also were able to meet the head of the local district government and the school inspectors. The latter were very pleased about the new latrines!

Volunteers taught for six days and interacted with all ages. The children at the school were surprised by UK mode of teaching compared to learning by rote from the blackboard. It was clear that the pupils really enjoyed activities such as the play parachute and blowing bubbles.

We brought £100 worth of books, pens, etc with surplus money. We left behind all our teaching aids and one volunteer left his guitar at the school for the children.

During the visit we were able to visit vulnerable families from the village which was particularly sobering when you saw families decimated by AIDS and barely able to survive on the little they grew.

The visit was incredibly beneficial and we were able to interact more directly with the school leadership, teaching staff and pupils.

The next visit is planned for Summer 2013.
